The Jabbering Bulbul
Birds of the bulbul family are conversationalists. And among bulbuls, the Red-vented bulbul is a certified chatterbox. Often flying in pairs or little groups, Red-vented bulbuls use a variety of vocalisations – chirps, chatter, calls, whistles, songs and, like this one, jabbers. Red-vented bulbuls are frequent visitors to trees in the Baner suburb of Pune. This one was sitting atop an African tulip tree and generally chirping. It stopped to listen to passing metro trains, koels and parrots, and then sent short announcements to who knows who. After a bit it spotted our editor and started a conversation, eventually launching into a TEDx jabber with a full range of chirps, twerps, calls and whistles. It was very irked when our attention shifted to an Oriental magpie robin that flew in and perched on an adjacent branch. It is mesmerising, almost hypnotic, to watch a bloom of jellyfish as they traverse the waters. Their movements have a mathematical precision, an artistic symmetry and a biological rhythm that is their own and yet one with other aspects of the universe, including the resting heartbeat of humans.
