I have always been an inquisitive person. Even today, at the age of 54, I haven't lost the curiosity of the child I once was. I vividly remember my teachers advising me to focus on mastering only a few skills rather than trying to learn everything. Their reasoning was simple: "A jack of all trades is a master of none."

Many of us who attended convent schools must have heard this phrase countless times. Even throughout our professional careers, we continue to encounter people who believe that success comes only from becoming an expert in one specific field rather than developing a broad range of capabilities.

However, I believe Artificial Intelligence is changing that paradigm.

In today's world, being curious about many subjects is no longer a disadvantage. In fact, it can be a significant strength. If deep expertise is required, AI-powered assistants such as Copilot, Claude, or Gemini can help provide specialised knowledge within seconds. The combination of human curiosity and AI-driven expertise is creating a new way of working and learning.

Having spent much of my career in the travel technology industry, I have witnessed several waves of technological transformation. Traditionally, travel technology focused on enabling itinerary creation, reservations, and ticketing through sophisticated software platforms. Behind the scenes, industry protocols and standards ensure that this multi-billion-dollar ecosystem functions smoothly, coordinating airline schedules, fares, and bookings across the globe.

Looking back, it is almost unimaginable how such intricate operational processes were managed before the advent of modern technology.

Today, however, travel technology extends far beyond airline ticketing.

Many travel professionals possess exceptional expertise in Global Distribution Systems (GDS) and can build complex, multi-sector itineraries within minutes. They have mastered the art of ticketing. Yet today's traveler expects much more than an airline ticket. Customers seek complete travel experiences that include flights, hotel reservations, visa assistance, transfers, sightseeing, entertainment park tickets, and personalised recommendations, all bundled into a seamless itinerary that not only delivers memorable experiences but also offers excellent value for money.

As a result, travel professionals must now expand their skill sets beyond traditional technology platforms. While domain expertise remains important, adapting to AI tools has become equally critical. AI can instantly provide knowledge, insights, recommendations, and operational support that once required years of specialised experience.

My message to travel professionals is simple: embrace AI with open arms. Those who successfully combine industry expertise, customer understanding, and AI-powered capabilities will be best positioned to thrive in the future of travel.

The age of choosing between being a specialist or a generalist may be coming to an end. With AI as our partner, we can be curious learners, versatile professionals, and highly effective problem-solvers all at the same time.
